Hotel and travel industry are among the most common businesses to authorize a credit card. Authorizations themselves do not charge a customer but check that funds are available to capture within the next five days. Hotels will often capture a sale once you check out. The price can be adjusted because of room service, additional fees, or property damage.
To authorize a customer's card:
- Log into PayHQ.
- From the navigation panel, click “Web Terminal”.
- Select the “Authorize” tab.
- Enter the amount for authorization.
- Enter the credit card info into the required fields, and PayHQ will automatically detect the card type.
- Enter the security code or 'CVV'. The security code is the three-digit code typically found on the back of the card. American Express cards use the four-digit code on the front of the card.
- Enter your customer's email address to send them an electronic receipt for the authorization.
- Click “Authorize” and PayHQ will inform you if the payment was authorized or not.
Your customer's card is not charged in the authorization process, but rather when the authorization is captured. Most authorizations will be valid for 5 business days but can last up to 10 business days depending on your customer's banking institution. Your customer is only charged when you capture the authorization.
